“A load of completely normal people get together – with a unique result”: this is what a well-known theatre magazine had to say about Gala, the latest work by international performance star Jérôme Bel. — Gala, is a portrait – a portrait of individuals, a portrait of bodies, a portrait of the city we live in. Newly produced for
Wiesbaden and its inhabitants. They take over the stage. Including those you wouldn’t normally find in a theatre. Who are the invisible people in our society? Which bodies do we suppress? Jérôme Bel subverts conventional power structures of representation and gives the individual a chance for autonomy. Ruthlessly. Lustfully. Radically beautiful. A demanding evening that nonetheless has a lot of laughs. In Jérôme Bel’s piece, Samuel Beckett’s famous quote, “Fail again, fail better”, turns out to have a deeply funny side.
